Human beings are heterotrophs.  Heterotrophs are organisms that cannot make their own food but rather rely on other organisms for substantial nutrients.  Humans must eat other organisms in order to substain life.  We must eat organisms such as corn and cows.

Autotrophs are organisms which make their own nutrients.  Trees are autotrophs, they don't eat other organisms in order to substain life.  Instead, they take advantage of a system known as photosynthesis, which allows them to internally create their own nutrients with the ingredients of sun and water.
