The Hot Zone Part 2

I wish that this section would have mentioned the year that everything took place.  It was frustrating to try and figure out how recent this was.  On page 202, CJ Peters made me gag.  Everything that he ate was completely revolting, and the fact that he discussed how he would prepare the guinea pig, then eat it was completely disgusting.  Definitely TMI.  I felt really bad when I read about John Jaax, and for a minute, I thought they were talking about Jerry (since their names are so similar).  And again, with those poor monkeys!!!!  Another thing that was completely revolting was that whoever was digging into the monkey spleens described it as if they were cutting into SALAMI.  I will never eat salami again without that image coming into my mind.  Also, on pages 181-182, the diamond knife is SOOO expensive, but kind of interesting that you can cut through cells with it.  I honestly would probably shoot myself if I was the one who knew that there was a humongous killing-machine in Washington.  I would not be able to handle that much information!  Nancy is pretty smart for slyly making CJ Peters bring the monkey carcasses across state lines.  That is just plain gross.  And the whole description that if they waited a day longer the monkeys would have been soup?  Eww.  I do not know how people can go on with their lives after witnessing some of this stuff.

  1. The details are worthy of a TMI. I remember thinking the same thing while I was reading parts of the section! It's scary to think about!

  2. I felt bad for the monkeys as well because the ones that were not infected until they go to Washington could've lived long healthy lives. And for all the monkeys from one room were killed made me sad because they were healthy.

  3. Although it is hard for many to stomach how gruesome the virus is, those details are important to the story, as they show just how dangerous and risky being around the virus is.
