The Hot Zone: Part 2

Much like other people I found myself getting lost in this section of the book because of all the new characters but at the same time I found this part of the book much more interesting than part 1. The introduction of the monkeys adds a new view on the virus and how it can move from species to species and it's effects on these animals and humans alike. I felt myself scared for the scientists testing these animals especially after the spotted blood was found in their spleens and the scientists sniffed the blood. Although they didn't get sick, i'm still scared that eventually they will get sick. I'm very interested in how the monkeys in the other rooms are being infected but my guess would be that the people carry the virus but it doesn't affect them just the monkeys. The way they kept the filovirus secret from everyone else also sets an ominous tone and shows me how dangerous it is. When they figure out that it is the ebola virus they expand the protection to even a higher level and now it can be spread through the air but luckily the CDC gets involved very quickly. My questions are why are proper measures not being taken in the transportation of these monkeys and what danger it could put people in. Also how has the virus seemed to evolve from the original case in part 1.

  1. Well at least they double bagged and dipped the bags in bleach for some safety measure. However I do agree with the tone it sets by not telling the public, but I guess is for the best. The army shouldn't have to cause a national panic attack if possible.

  2. Completely agree regarding the secrecy of the disease, it really seems to make it that much more impressive when you learn that the keep something so dangerous a complete secret.
