phloem

In vascular plants such as this maple tree, the phloem is the part that carries sugars to all areas of the plant to be used.  In the case of trees (like this maple) the phloem is the innermost layer of the bark, so it is not visible in this picture (it is internal; the middle of the tree's trunk)
