Photo Scavenger Hunt: Week 2

The following photos contain a wrist watch to ensure that I took the photos myself.

To be considered a hydrophobic substance, the substance must have little or no affinity for water. In other words, hydrophobic substances repel and don't mix well with water. Some examples of hydrophobic substances are oils, fats, and anything greasy in general (butter).

This is my dog Jake. He is an endotherm because he (like other dogs) is a warm-blooded animal. He is able to maintain a constant body temperature independent of the environment.

These flowers contain pollen, the fertilizing element of flowering plants. Pollen consists of fine, powdery-yellow grains or spores that are sometimes present in masses.

A C4 plant is a plant in which the carbon dioxide is first fixed into a compound containing four carbon atoms before entering the Calvin cycle of photosynthesis. The best environment for a C4 plant, like maize (corn), is one with high daytime temperatures, intense sunlight, and drought.
Dogwood plants contain modified leaves called bracts that surround the true flowers and perform the same function as showy petals. Bracts can be quite small or quite large and are not always as conspicuous as others are.

A cactus is used to its desert ecosystem which includes hot temperatures and little water. When a cactus moves to a more deciduous ecosystem, it adjusts/changes in behavior, physiology, and structure to become more suited to its new environment. This is called adaptation of a plant.

An orchid is an example of a CAM (Crassulacean Acid Metabolism) plant. CAM plants utilize the CAM  as an adaptation for arid conditions.  CO2 entering the stomata during the night is converted into organic acids, which release CO2 for the Calvin cycle during the day, when the stomata are closed.

This is a gymnosperm cone. These are the cones that fall off a gymnosperm tree that are in the shape of a cone. The seeds of these trees are borne in these cones and are not visible.

A frond is an often large, finely divided leaf, especially as applied to the ferns ( as in the picture above) and certain palms.

This is lichen. Lichen is composed of fungus in symbiotic union with an alga and having a greenish, gray, yellow, brown, or blackish thallus . Lichen grow in leaf-like, crust-like, or branching form on rocks, trees, etc.
