Part one of the Hot Zone

First off, I have mixed feelings about the reading.  I find it both interesting and very gory.  It is also quite suspenseful and leaves you wondering what is going to happen next.  I like reading about the effects that Ebola and Marburg have on humans and all the different theories about how they are being spread.  The part i didn't so much enjoy is how they go into detal about the death of Dr. Musoke, Mayinga, and Peter Cardinal.  It made me feel a little uncomfortable. I also feel bad for those monkeys that have to go through the pain of the diseases, and how they are placed in the caves for weeks hoping to become sick.
I learned a lot in the reading about viruses.  It suprised me about how much protection scientists take when handling a level 4 hot agent.  I also learned more about the differences in the way different viruses spread, like aids and Marburg.  It confused me that such a deadly virus like Marburg isn't that easy to spread, since Mayinga was infected with it but got no one sick.  I also didn't know that viruses were so complex and are seen as living beings and each type of virsus has it's own shape.
Some questions I'd like to know the awnsers to are where in the Kitum Cave is the Marburg virus hiding? And if they do find out where, will they be able to find a cure? And where is Ebola hiding? And why does Ebola keep disappearing and reappearing? And why do the effects of Ebola differ with the different outbreaks of it?

  1. Wow your questions are really good actually! When I posted my response I didn't think I had any questions, but now reading yours I guess I was wondering those too a bit! Especially about where they were hiding! Did it have to do with when they were around the bats? Hmm fascinating! I really like your questions. Also, I felt the same way about Dr. Musoke and all the other people's deaths. It was really sad and sickening to read about. I didn't like it one bit! And those poor monkeys! Dying from any of these viruses would be extremely painful....especially since no one really knew how to help or what was going on at the time. It's hard to imagine this actually happening. Scary stuff!
