Hot Zone Part 1

The fact that this novel is based on a true story makes this seemingly fictional story mind boggling. The politics and red tape that is talked about in the investigation used to find the source of the virus is what compelled me to continue to read part one of The Hot Zone. Virus amplification is the key word for part one,  because the Ebola Marburg virus not only amplified from apes to humans the book says it began else where and upon further research i found it is believed that fruit bats are the host source of the virus. My only question is how virus amplification takes place does the virus physically change at all? Or dose it simply change its course of action?
