Radial Symmetry


Radial symmetry- this starfish can be divided through the middle in many different ways, with different planes in different places, to form two symmetrical halves

Modified leaf of a plant


Modified leaf of a plant- when a leaf is performing some functions more/other than photosynthesis and transpiration.  The spines of this cactus are modified because they serve other purposes, such as protection and reduced water loss because of less surface area.

Hydrophilic

Hydrophilic- this salt dissolves easily in water.  the definition of hydrophilic is anything that has a natural liking of water, so the fact that this salt dissolves in water shows that it is hydrophilic

Hydrophobic

Hydrophobic- this oil does not mix with water.  it is repelled by the water, so it has no natural liking of water, making it hydrophobic.

Vestigial structures


Vestigial structures- functionless structures that were functioning in an ancestral species. The muscles in the human ear are underdeveloped compared to ancestral species of monkeys, because the muscles of the ear was to help move the ear and humans that same level capability. Now that muscle is considered to have no biological function. 

Ethylene


Ethylene- a colorless odorless gas used in agriculture to force the ripening of fruits. It serves as a hormone in plants. It is used on many citrus fruits to speed up the process to ripen and to be ready to sell such as this lime.

Rhizome


Rhizome- a root like subterranean stem commonly horizontal in position that usually produces roots below and sends up shoots progressively from the upper surface. Ginger is a rhizome of a plant because it has roots that grow below it and shoots that grows above it. 

C4 plant


C4 plant- a plant that utilizes the C4 carbon fixation pathway in which the CO2 is first bound to a phospoenolpyruvate in mesophyll cell resulting in the formation of a four carbon compound that is shuttled to the bundle sheath cell where it will be decarboxylated to liberate the CO2 to be utilized in the C3 pathway.  Corn is a C4 plant because it does what is listed above as well as being grown in areas where C3 plants wouldn't grow well. 

C3 plant


C3 plant- a plant that utilizes the C3 carbon fixation pathway as the sole mechanism to convert CO2 into an organic compound. C3 plants must be in areas where CO2 concentration is high, temperature and light intensity are moderate, and ground water is abundant, which is all true for rice.

Hydrophilic


Hydrophilic- having a strong natural liking of water. The salt is hydrophilic because it can be easily dissolved in water. 

Hydrophobic


Hydrophobic- no natural like of water. The oil is repelled by the water and they don't mix so the oil is hydrophobic.

Bilateral symmetry


Bilateral symmetry- There is only one possible way to divide me in half to have roughly symmetrical mirror halves. 

Radial Symmetry


Radial symmetry- a basic body plan in which the organism can be divided into similar halves by passing a plane at any angle along a central axis as shown by this starfish.

CAM plant

CAM plant- a carbon fixation pathway that evolved in some plants as an adaptation to arid conditions
This pineapple is a CAM plant because of features, such as thick, reduced leaves with a low surface-area-to-volume ratio, thick cuticle, and stomata sunken into pits. 

Cambium


Cambium- meristematic plant tissue commonly present as a thin layer which forms new cells on both sides.  this tissue is present in the needles of evergreens and other gymnosperms

Autotroph

Autotroph- an organism that produces complex organic compounds from simple substances present in its surroundings, usually using energy from light.  this plant makes its food from light through photosynthesis, so it is an autotroph

Bilateral Symmetry


Bilateral symmetry- only one plane will divide an organism into roughly mirror image halves.  this leaf can be cut in half only one way to make both sides symmetrical

Auxin Producing Area of a Plant


Auxin producing area of a plant- auxin is a hormone that is made by plants where a new root or shoot is growing.  Auxin is being produced in this new flower bud

Anther and Filament of Stamen


    Anther and filament of stamen- the stamen is the male reproductive organ of a flower, the filament is the stalk like portion of the stamen that supports the anther, which is the pollen bearing part of the stamen
